Step four

STEP 4: You’re ready to start.

You’ve chosen what you want to do and you have:

  • Found a suitable organisation
  • Applied, been interviewed and accepted Here’s a checklist of what you should now expect (as a basic minimum)
  • A contact person if you have any problems
  • A clear outline of tasks
  • An induction, ongoing support and training
  • Travel and out-of-pocket expenses (You must provide receipts, ask the organisation for their policy on this.
  • Insurance cover for the work you are doing
  • Contact with other staff and volunteers
  • Recognition and thanks

Finally, it’s probably worth remembering that by volunteering you could:

  • Meet new people and have fun
  • Challenge yourself
  • Build on existing skills and develop new ones
  • Get a reference to assist in finding paid work
  • Have something interesting to put on your CV, which could help you to stand apart from other candidates
  • Try something new
  • Change your career
  • Help build a better community
  • Make a difference to other people’s lives
  • Help a voluntary organisation ‘stay in business’ - without volunteers most voluntary organisations would not survive!
