Step four

You’ve chosen what you want to do and you have:

Found a suitable organisation
Applied, been interviewed and accepted Here’s a checklist of what you should now expect (as a basic minimum)
A contact person if you have any problems
A clear outline of tasks
An induction, ongoing support and training
Travel and out-of-pocket expenses (You must provide receipts, ask the organisation for their policy on this.
Insurance cover for the work you are doing
Contact with other staff and volunteers
Recognition and thanks

Finally, it’s probably worth remembering that by volunteering you could:

Meet new people and have fun
Challenge yourself
Build on existing skills and develop new ones
Get a reference to assist in finding paid work
Have something interesting to put on your CV, which could help you to stand apart from other candidates
Try something new
Change your career
Help build a better community
Make a difference to other people’s lives
Help a voluntary organisation ‘stay in business’ - without volunteers most voluntary organisations would not survive!
