Step four
STEP 4: You’re ready to start.
You’ve chosen what you want to do and you have:
- Found a suitable organisation
- Applied, been interviewed and accepted Here’s a checklist of what you should now expect (as a basic minimum)
- A contact person if you have any problems
- A clear outline of tasks
- An induction, ongoing support and training
- Travel and out-of-pocket expenses (You must provide receipts, ask the organisation for their policy on this.
- Insurance cover for the work you are doing
- Contact with other staff and volunteers
- Recognition and thanks
Finally, it’s probably worth remembering that by volunteering you could:
- Meet new people and have fun
- Challenge yourself
- Build on existing skills and develop new ones
- Get a reference to assist in finding paid work
- Have something interesting to put on your CV, which could help you to stand apart from other candidates
- Try something new
- Change your career
- Help build a better community
- Make a difference to other people’s lives
- Help a voluntary organisation ‘stay in business’ - without volunteers most voluntary organisations would not survive!
